New York, Washington, D.C. and other major metros may be some of the most sought-after job markets for young professionals, but for ample opportunities and high-paying roles, they may have better luck in the Sun Belt. The metro areas around Tucson, Arizona; Tallahassee, Florida; and Gainesville, Florida; are the fastest-growing job markets for entry-level roles, according to new data from LinkedIn. The top industries hiring entry-level workers are secure fields like manufacturing, government, education and health care. 1 priority is finding a job with stability. The professional services sector has seen more layoffs in recent years, Kantenga says, but common jobs in consulting and legal services also pay "extremely well," which may be a worthwhile tradeoff for young people.

Moving away from a major city, Moretti found, can be terrible for your career. The market for WFH jobs has cratered, putting everyone who moved away from big cities at risk. Those who moved away from big cities effectively gave up their career insurance. In a big city, you also run into people who work for other companies in your industry — on the bus, at the bar, in line at the deli. "The benefits of being a big city," Moretti tells me, "have been underappreciated" during the pandemic.

It’s likely to face legal challenges, which means its implementation could be delayed or even blocked in court, like the Texas law that inspired it has been so far. In addition to Iowa’s new law, Cid says several recent immigration proposals in the state failed to clear the legislature. This bill gives Iowa law enforcement the power to do what he is unwilling to do: enforce immigration laws already on the books. A similar trend unfolded after Arizona passed a controversial immigration law in 2010, says Anand Balakrishnan, a senior staff attorney at the American Civil Liberties Union’s Immigrant Rights Project. Estefania Mondragon, executive director of PODER of Idaho, hopes a proposed immigration law won't pass there.

The American Dream is under siege

Parents of young children are making difficult choices to afford child care — or they’re opting to evade it by dropping out of the workforce altogether. Even as the inflation rate has cooled across the US economy, child care remains a sore spot for many families. The weekly price of day care for a toddler surged 9% in 2023, according to Care.com, a marketplace for child care. Of course, Allison is hardly alone in feeling like the American Dream has been more difficult — and expensive — to attain than imagined. “The American dream is being taken away from the younger generation by the housing affordability challenges,” said Lawrence Yun, chief economist at the National Association of Realtors.

Clark ended Thursday with 3,569 career points and could set the all-time scoring record in men’s and women’s NCAA basketball history before the season’s end. The late Pete Maravich, who played at Louisiana State for three seasons from 1967 to 1970, holds that record – 3,667 points. Her 49 points Thursday also was a one-game best for her in college, and a one-game best for any University of Iowa women’s basketball player. Before Thursday’s game, at Iowa’s weekly news conference, Clark was asked if she ever thought she could be in a position to surpass the career scoring record. DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa’s medical board on Thursday approved some guidance abortion providers would need to follow if the state’s ban on most abortions after about six weeks of pregnancy is upheld by the Iowa Supreme Court. The restrictive abortion law is currently on hold as the court considers Gov. That would be a stark change for women in Iowa, where abortion is legal up to 20 weeks of pregnancy. Most Republican-led states have drastically limited abortion access since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and handed authority on abortion law to the states. Fourteen states now have bans with limited exceptions and two states, Georgia and South Carolina, ban abortion after cardiac activity is detected.

At McDonald’s, which has repeatedly boasted about its ability to raise menu prices without denting sales, executives are finally acknowledging that customers need a break. But his focus on affordability marked a shift from just a few months ago, when he boasted that US menu prices, which went up as much as 10% in 2023 alone, weren’t deterring sales. On TikTok, it’s a common refrain for McDonald’s customers to say the company has gone too far, charging more than $3 for a single hash brown in some locations. Still, up until recently, McDonald’s found most customers were still willing to pay. Kempczinski said McDonald’s would double down on its “D123” strategy, which prices some items between $1 and $3.
